Bayern Munich honorary president Franz Beckenbauer has warned Pep Guardiola it would be unacceptable to try to take any members of his current squad to Manchester City this summer.
Guardiola has agreed a three-year contract at City, which will begin when his Bayern deal expires at the end of the season, and there has been speculation he is keen to sign players such as Manuel Neuer and David Alaba.
Bild reported on Monday that he had unsuccessfully attempted to persuade Alaba to join City, but Bayern CEO Karl-Heinz Rummenigge quickly denied the story and Guardiola himself has previously said he has no intention of poaching any member of the squad.
Beckenbauer, who enjoyed a hugely successfully playing career with Bayern and later had two brief spells as coach and later became club president, said he did not expect Guardiola to pursue any deals but warned him against any efforts to do so.
"This can't happen," Beckenbauer, whose current role at Bayern is purely ceremonial, told Bild. "If true, this is not acceptable, but I don't think Guardiola is capable of doing it."
Rummenigge said in December that the fact that Bayern's players remain under contract means any sales to City can be ruled out, and Arjen Robben has said he does not believe Guardiola would ever attempt to convince any of the squad to follow him.
There have, however, been concerns over the former Barcelona coach's commitment to Bayern during the final months of his deal at the Allianz Arena.
Guardiola was recently pictured in Amsterdam, where he met City's director of football Txiki Begiristain and representatives of Borussia Dortmund midfielder Ilkay Gundogan.
Rummenigge subsequently said he had no issue with Guardiola preparing for his next job in his free time, and Germany legend Beckenbauer agreed that the situation is tolerable so long as he remains focused on his current role.
"I think it's difficult for everyone involved, for Bayern and Pep," Beckenbauer said. "There will always be speculation.
"I understand that he wants to sign players for Manchester [City] in the spring, and if he does that in his free time, for instance travels to Amsterdam, [that is OK] as long as he doesn't neglect his duties at Bayern."
