FPL Scout Extra: Double Gameweeks call for careful approach

Gameweek 34 has been eagerly anticipated. Boosted by five rescheduled fixtures, Fantasy Premier League managers will be targeting this extended set of match-ups as an opportunity to transform their seasons.

Ten Barclays Premier League sides feature twice, with many of those teams harbouring assets that present the optimum potential for FPL points.
Although FPL managers with Wildcards available can give themselves total freedom to ring the changes ahead of the weekend deadline, Gameweek 33 served a cautionary tale for those contemplating a complete overhaul.

Popular assets such as Toby Alderweireld (42%) and Jamie Vardy (50%) produced 15 and 13 points respectively, severely punishing those who chose to part company due to the fact that neither player has a "double Gameweek" to follow.
Similarly, Leicester City's defence served up a fifth straight clean sheet, whilst Swansea City's Gylfi Sigurdsson produced points for the sixth successive Gameweek.
Clearly, then, sacrificing those in-form or highly-owned established FPL assets who offer single Gameweek fixtures has the potential to backfire.
Weighing up the level of investment in teams with extended schedules is key. FPL managers should scan their squads and devise a transfer policy with this in mind.
Gameweek 35's reduced programme should be a factor. Six teams are without a fixture, as Crystal Palace, Everton, Manchester United, Norwich City, West Ham United and Watford sit out the Gameweek.
The objective is to increase the opportunity to get a fully active XI available for Gameweek 35, whilst bolstering the squad with players who offer two matches in Gameweek 34. Forward thinkers should also look to Gameweek 37, when another eight teams enjoy two fixtures - again, the task is to ensure that the squad is set up to exploit this.

Spending additional points on transfers can be a valid short-term tactic.
FPL managers should consider that, if they have gaps in their squad for Gameweek 35, the four-point cost of any transfers made ahead of Gameweek 34 could be reduced. An asset with two fixtures in Gameweek 34, who also offers the potential to start in Gameweek 35, is set up to provide points from three sets of 90 minutes.

Four teams play twice in Gameweek 34 and retain their Gameweek 35 fixture - Arsenal, Liverpool, Newcastle United and West Bromwich Albion. These teams offer assets of varying reliability and quality.
Liverpool are a unique case in that they tick all the boxes: the Merseysiders have two fixtures in both Gameweek 34 and 37, whilst also retaining a Gameweek 35 encounter with Newcastle.
Transfers should target Jurgen Klopp's squad, although as demonstrated by Sunday's teamsheet for the 4-1 win over Stoke City, the Reds' UEFA Europa League campaign will impact on Klopp's selection. Liverpool could yet enjoy a potential semi-final around that Anfield encounter with Newcastle and their Gameweek 36 trip to Swansea City.
Arsenal stand out as the next most likely source, with assured assets such as Hector Bellerin, Alexis Sanchez and Mesut Ozil seemingly well placed to claim three starts over the next two Gameweeks.
Targets within the Newcastle and West Brom squads looks less assured. Nonetheless, they could still reap rewards if they are replacing assets who miss Gameweek 35 and who play only once in Gameweek 34.
Gameweek 34 could well deliver three-figure hauls to transform the rankings and mini-leagues. Nonetheless, last weekend offered a timely reminder that FPL managers need to carefully assess the influence of the fixture list on their transfer policy, whilst also preserving faith in proven talent.
