Steven Naismith, Andros Townsend and Wahbi Khazri could prove to be FPL gamechangers |
Just over a year ago, Leicester City produced an improbable run of seven wins from their final nine Barclays Premier League matches to preserve their top-flight status.
That late-season rally gave Fantasy Premier League managers an opportunity to freshen their squads with a cast of previously ignored talent.
Players such as Jamie Vardy, Riyad Mahrez and Marc Albrighton were elevated as FPL assets, handing an opportunity for canny managers to profit.
While we may never see another side replicate such an escape, we are at the stage in the season where the formbook can be turned on its head by a club's raw survival instincts.
The current scenario presents three teams with the potential to battle clear of the trapdoor. Newcastle United, Norwich City and Sunderland are separated by a point and are adrift from the safety of 17th by eight or nine points.
At least one of these three are likely to avoid the drop and, to do so, they will have to embark on a run of results that could promote key members of their squad as FPL assets.
Norwich have the fixtures to spark a revival. Following this weekend’s Carrow Road match with Manchester City, Alex Neil’s men host both Newcastle and Sunderland on home turf, matches that look destined to decide their fate.
With further home encounters with a recently inconsistent Watford as well as Manchester United, plus away trips to West Bromwich Albion and Crystal Palace, the Canaries have the opportunity to pull clear.
The craft and goal threat of Wes Hoolahan (£4.7m) and Nathan Redmond (£5.0m) look vital to their cause. Prominent in the early stages of the campaign, this pair of budget FPL midfielders may just emerge as unlikely end-of-season Fantasy talent.
Georginio Wijnaldum (£6.8m) and Andros Townsend (£5.8m) represent their most likely candidates to provide the goals necessary to secure vital points.
Sunderland have a tougher run-in but, arguably, have the stronger form and resources to stage an escape.
Sam Allardyce will undoubtedly identify away trips to Newcastle and Norwich, along with home meetings with West Bromwich Albion and Everton, as his side’s key remaining fixtures.
In Wahbi Khazri (£6.0m) and Jermain Defoe (£5.1m) Allardyce has the players both to create and seize upon goalscoring opportunities. If the Black Cats are to scramble clear, that pair will surely come to the fore.
FPL managers must now monitor the situation of these clubs carefully.
While it is often comforting to remain faithful to assets who are in the top half of the table, Leicester’s 2014/15 exploits proved there can be huge end-of-season potential within a squad driven by the threat of relegation.
