Edin Dzeko broke his three-month goal drought as Roma flew into third place with a 3-1 victory away to Carpi.
The Giallorossi had won three on the bounce and welcomed back Radja Nainggolan from suspension, but Daniele De Rossi, Francesco Totti, Vasilis Torosidis, Norbert Gyomber and Kevin Strootman were sidelined. Miralem Pjanic and Seydou Keita were rested ahead of the Champions League clash with Real Madrid. Carpi had Paolo Bianco suspended with Lorenzo Pasciuti, Jonathan De Guzman and Matteo Fedele on the treatment table.
There were numerous shots off target in the first half, then Dzeko saw his attempt from close range deflected off Emanuel Suagher. Mohamed Salah burst into the box after a give-and-go with Dzeko, but Vid Belec was quick to smother the attempted chip at his feet.
Alessandro Florenzi’s deflected strike was flapped over the bar and Dzeko aimed a weak header straight at the goalkeeper. Jerry Mbakogu’s pace surprised Wojciech Szczesny and he managed to go round, but slipped and couldn’t find the net from a tight angle.
Moments later Matteo Mancosu went down under a Kostas Manolas hip swivel and at first Paolo Tagliavento appeared to point to the spot, but instead he booked the Carpi forward for simulation.
Roma were unlucky on the stroke of half-time, as Dzeko nodded on a Radja Nainggolan pass for Salah, who controlled with a great first touch and his chip beat Belec only to bounce off the bar.
Luciano Spalletti threw on Pjanic for the second half and his free kick whistled wide almost immediately, but the deadlock was broken by a sudden Digne screamer from distance. Curiously, he only had one other Serie A goal and that was also against Carpi in the 5-1 win earlier this season.
Mbakogu fired straight at Szczesny, but Carpi equalised very quickly with Kevin Lasagna, who had only just come off the bench.
It was Lasagna who nodded on the long ball in the centre-circle for Mbakogu, who shrugged off Antonio Rudiger to roll across the six-yard box for the simplest of tap-ins.
Belec smothered Dzeko and Nainggolan efforts, while Diego Perotti blasted over, but the Bosnian striker broke his goal drought that had lasted since November – 10 games in all competition.
Salah did very well to shrug off defenders down the right and roll across where Dzeko just had to tap in from a couple of yards. The former Manchester City forward celebrated by sucking his thumb, as he became a father a couple of weeks ago.
Moments later Dzeko assisted Nainggolan, forcing a desperate Belec save at his feet, but the goalkeeper could do nothing on Salah’s follow-up.
